Tractors - The Prime-Movers In Agriculture :
Familiarizing with the different types of tractors is very important as they are used in a wide range of operations. In agriculture, the tractor is a prime-mover which can be used for carrying out farm operations such as:
• land leveling and
• operating stationary machines ( irrigation pumps, threshers, chaff cutters, cane crushers, etc.)
Difference Between Tractors And Automobiles:
Automobile engines are generally unsuitable for tractors as they are designed for high torque and the engine is expected to be able to produce it for longer times, whereas Tractors are designed to produce maximum power the engine will produce at the best speed.
Many sizes and types of engines are available for automobiles including the engine for tractors. The selection of engines for automobiles depends mainly upon their uses. The engine used for on-road vehicles like cars, trucks, etc. are different than the engines used for off-road vehicles like tractors.
The main emphasis will be given on the design requirement of different components of the engine and the selection of engines for the tractors.
Why Is The Alternator The Most Essential Element In A Vehicle?
It provides power to the rest of the electrical system while the vehicle is running. A battery is like a storage tank for energy. It can only supply power for so long before becoming drained. The alternator acts like a pump to top the battery up and supply power to the rest of the vehicle. Usually, the alternator is mounted to the side or top of the engine and driven via a belt.
Types of Alternators Available for Agricultural Tractors:
Most typical farm or road vehicles use a 12V system; larger commercial vehicles may use 24V electrical set-up. One type is the belt-driven alternator, typically mounted on the engine. As the belt turns the alternator, the alternator continually generates power to recharge the battery.
The other type of system has a stator - which converts the rotating magnetic field to an electric current, that sits underneath the flywheel.
How Does It Work?
Generators produce Direct Current. The alternator produces an A.C. that in turn must be rectified or converted into D.C. and then stored in a battery. Alternators are more compact than dynamo (generators) systems and can supply more current at low speeds because at idle engine speeds they run at double the engine speed. Hence the life of a battery is increased with the alternators. Alternators have the advantage of producing far more current at low speeds than generators, thus allowing more and more accessories in the vehicle. The alternator comprises,
• principal Rotor,
• Rectifier Pack,
• Regulator / Brush Box.
Starter Motor: The starter motor is a four-pole series-connected DC Unit. The starter provides rotational motivation to turn the engine over to begin the combustion process. It is an electric motor that sits between the engine and transmission and connects to the flywheel (manual) or flexplate (automatic).
The Wear And Tear We Should Take Care Of In Starters And Alternators:
Alternators can wear over time and lose their ability to generate current.
• The alternator works using a rotor with magnets attached to it spinning inside a stationary armature.
• If the rotor becomes damaged or connections inside of the alternator fail, the alternator’s ability to generate current is compromised.
• It is recommended to use a multimeter to test the current between the various components of the tractor’s electrical system to identify where the issue is.
• A broken alternator can be replaced altogether, and in some cases repaired, depending on the issue.
• In Starters, typical causes of wear include the contacts in the solenoid, which degrade over time from friction, abrasion, contamination, and corrosion.
• Furthermore, the brushes inside the DC electric motor may also fail due to abrasion and corrosion. This can cause a no-start condition.
• The starter must then be re-manufactured by replacing the affected components.
There is a wide and diversified range of Starters and Alternators that are capable of satisfying and exceeding customer requirements like alternators for a Lawn tractor, farm tractors, and other off-road vehicles are available (dealer name).
To wind up, all the machines require periodical servicing, maintenance, and repairs for efficient and economical performance to stay in good operating conditions throughout working life.
Although most of the tractor manufacturers have appointed their dealers to provide operational know-how, after-sales, and services of their products, yet, these are inadequate. Consequently, many machines are not properly maintained and are subjected to abnormal break downs, wear and tear and thereby reducing the effective life of the machines. it's a good choice to purchase your product to a real specialist like (the local dealer) for ranges, brands, and services for Battery, Alternator, Starter & Electrical spare parts.
